In an order to create participative, transparent and responsive
government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the much ambitious
'Digital India' programme on Wednesday, July 1, at the Indira Gandhi
Indoor Stadium in the national capital.
Top industrialists like RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh
Ambani, Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry, Wipro Chairman Azim Premji and
many others, were among the business honchos who shared their ideas of
taking digital revolution to the masses.
What is Digital India?
With the launch of Digital India programme, the government is taking
a big step forward to transform the country into a digitally empowered
knowledge economy.
Includes various schemes worth over Rs 1 lakh crore like Digital
Locker, e-eduction, e-health, e-sign and national scholarship portal.
BharatNet in 11 states and Next Generation Network (NGN), are also a
part of Digital India campaign.
The programme includes projects that aim to ensure that government
services are available to citizens electronically and people get benefit
of the latest information and communication technology.
The Ministry of Communications and IT is the nodal agency to
implement the programme.
Digital India is a campaign launched by the Government of India
to ensure that Government services are made available to citizens
electronically by improving online infrastructure and by increasing
Internet connectivity or by making the country digitally empowered in
the field of technology.

Digital India is a Programme to prepare India for a knowledge future.
Hon'ble Shri Narender Modi, Prime Minsiter of India has laid emphasis
on National e- governance plan and has gave it’s approval for Digital
India – A programme to transform India into digital empowered society
and knowledge economy.
Digital India is an ambitious programme of
Government of India projected at Rs 1,13,000 crores. This will be for
preparing the India for the knowledge based transformation and
delivering good governance to citizens by synchronized and co-ordinated
engagement with both Central Government and State Government.
This programme has been envisaged by Department
of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) and will impact
ministry of communications & IT, ministry of rural development,
ministry of human resource development, ministry of health and others.
This programme will also benefit all states and union territories. The
existing/ ongoing e-Governance initiatives would be revamped to align
them with the principles of Digital India.
The vision of Digital India is to transform the country into a digitally
empowered society and knowledge economy. It would ensure that
government services are available to citizens electronically. It would
also bring in public accountability through mandated delivery of
government’s services electronically.
